Hey everyone,
This is a tribute thread to celebrate the 10th aniversary of Nascar Heat that was first released by Hasbro/MGI in September 2000.
Note that since we are already in September 2009, this is the first month of the 10th year that will be completed in 2010.
Let's use this thread to pay a tribute for all those guys who contributed to keep Heat alive throughout the years.
I just created a celebratory seal stamp pictures or anything else linked to a Heat release. No need to ask for use it. Is free to anyone that finds a good use..
Now, out of curiousitty, the first things I'd like to know is:
- Wich was the first (or first ones) mod released for Heat? Who made it? Who are the pioneers?
Time for some archeology guys, come on!!! |

By the way, here's some news that fits this thread beautifully:
Once again a Nascar Heat mod release is news. Just like happened to several SpeedSims mods earlier, the Grand Am submod for G2 was reviewed by the VirtualR.net website magazine.

Here's the VirtualR.net website adress:
http://www.virtualr.net/nascar-heat-platinum-g2-daytona-prototypes/
I like the nice words they used to describe the Heat Community....

I'm not certain on this so please correct me if I'm wrong, but the first I can remember is the Craftsman Truck Series mod release by HCmotorsports.com, or HighCompression.com? I think prior that actual "Model" mod, they might have released "paint" mods for the Busch Series. I can't remember if there were altered physics for the Busch mod or not.
Not to bash anyone, but as I recall in the early days, there was a lot of... (let me think of a tactful way to put it) elitist people who, for whatever reason, weren't good about sharing information and tools. Thankfully those days are long gone.
Then again, I'm old and that was a long time ago. At any rate, I think it's awesome that HEAT is still alive and kicking. |

Hmmmm...... interesting!!
I was always curious about how the guys did it for the first time (and who did it). What year was that?
Maybe ffsbuman have this mod in his archives...... I'd like to have it too.
Now, I agree with Chad on the "elitist" people in that old times. Kind of a strange behavior....
========================================================================
Another question:
Where are those guys now? it would be interesting to hear some stories from any of them...

I just found a 2000 Dodge Truck template posted for download by a certain "Jonh Hughes" at Black Hole. The file date is "June 30, 2001". Only nine months after the game release. So, the CTS mod itself was probably released way earlier than that....

alot of the guys from hcmotorsports went on to form pwf in nr2k3 and are part of iracing now. others form that group i have no idea where are.
there was also tylerb59 and his tracks i believe it was. he moved on to making games for the xbox.
raceday downloads moved on to nr2k3 and then disbanded after a little while. they still get on im and race 2k3 every once in awhile.
there was team tiresmoke or somethign like that dont know where they are now.
teamplayers was around during heat and then moved on to rfactor.
jayblade faded into the woodwork.
jimmyjak, myself, twchad, raybee, taz and some of the guys at texasspeedracing are still around.
i believe this community would have been a lot bigger now if not for all the elitists back in the beginning that basically chased off new modders. however, i find it extrememly funny that a game that is "dead" is still going strong 10 years later. nr2k3 is 7 years old this year also and i think runs second to heat in terms of enjoyment.
i still like to tinker with the editing side of things in heat but usually just enough to make sure i dont forget how to do it, however i leave heat running to guys like you blaxman who do a real great job with the mods you put together |

The three oldest mods in my collection are:
CTS - .car file dated 6/15/2001
UMP (dirt modifieds) - .car file dated 7/26/2001
LCH (Legends Cars Heat) - .car file dated 4/22/2002
Not saying these are the oldest, just saying these are the oldest I have. CTS still carries clout among the online-leaguers.
Thank you to all in the past for all the hard work and enjoyment they have provided and thank you to all in the future for their work!
NASCAR Heat is ALIVE AND WELL! |

Cool info, Sofa!! I wonder if any of those guys have idea on how is Heat communitty going nowadays...
I'm glad I'm able to help the community but, honestly, I always like to remember how important was the role those guys played in the early days of Heat. The elitist behavior is something hard to understand indeed. Maybe they fear something and tried to keep it low profile, copyrighting wise... or was simply by the taste of being the big guys.... I dont know....
Anyway, those were certainly hard days to make mods. They didnt have knowledge, tutorials or even the tools we have today. This is what amazes me!!
I consider the release of TheMask's tools (Winrestools, Mod Launchers and UICC) the biggest responsible for Heat's survival. Those are THE TOOLS!!! Added to the good tutorials available we can do almost anyhting the other newer games have.... |

Yeah, most of the testimonies (so far) are pointing to the CTS mod (June, 2001) as being the first one indeed.

Oh...... Nascar Heat on Wikipedia:

Curiously, the article was started in 2007 by nobody less than Mr. Magnus Tellbom.....

I seem to remember that it was Kevin Combs (of High Compression) that made the .mod tool plugin for 3dsmax, which allows us to export out .mod files for Heat. I believe he was the one who modeled the trucks as well. John Hughes owned the High Compression site, which was a NASCAR 3 site before they went to Heat. Tylerb59 was a part of High Compression in the early days of Heat, but he also had his own site, called Team Pepsi Racing, where some of the first tracks for Heat came from (Indianapolis, Portland, Dayton and a few others came from there).
Tyler helped me a lot, as did John Hughes....and Tyler was the one who passed along his Bowman Gray track to me, to let us finish it off for Heat.
As Sofa states, Tyler went on to make X-Box games for Microsoft. I think he is involved (or was) with the FORZA games.
Kevin Combs and John Hughes are now part of iRacing. |

Only learned about NHeat in late 2003 - and have enjoyed it since then.
And the best is: I still do , because IMO it's the most balanced sim out there.
What amazes me is that there's still things to find out about NHeat game engine.
Mauro's amazing ways of getting things to work that are not even in the game engine for example
Or findings from Sucahyo's hexcode analysing
I agree that the clandestine behaviour of the early modders did some harm as it scared a lot potential modders off. Even in 2004, when I started on the GroupC mod, it still was a fight to get some bits of info out of some guys. I'm glad these days are long since over as only the free spreading of info was what made all these findings in the last 3-4 years possible . And brought NHeat to a new level
Happy anniversary ! |
